Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC), a Finnish shipbuilder, has begun production work on the fourth Pohjanmaa-class corvette.
During a ceremony held at the company’s shipyard last Wednesday (14), Rauma also laid the keel for the third vessel, bringing all four ships of the Finnish Navy under construction simultaneously.
According to information from Defence Blog, the company said that the second vessel is approaching the completion of hull work, and the first corvette, launched in May 2025, has already reached the outfitting phase.
“We are very pleased to now have all the multi-role corvettes of the Pohjanmaa class under construction at the Rauma Shipyard,” said Mika Nieminen, CEO and President of RMC, in a statement.
“We have industrialized our procedures and construction processes to meet the requirements of our customers’ demanding projects. This is reflected in the progress we have made in basic shipbuilding activities, in other words, hull construction.”
The Logistics Command of the Finnish Defence Forces also confirmed the project’s progress, with Brigadier General of Engineering Juha-Matti Ylitalo stating that the development signals “the capability of our maritime industry, further strengthened also by the icebreaker projects that are about to begin.”
The Pohjanmaa class is being built under the Squadron 2020 program and was designed for year-round operation in Baltic Sea conditions. The ships are 117 meters long, with a beam of 16.5 meters, a draft of five meters, and a crew of approximately 70 personnel.
RMC said that preparations are also underway for the two U.S. Coast Guard icebreakers awarded at the end of 2025, with deliveries scheduled for 2028.
