Ducati has unveiled the new Desmo250 engine, a 249.7 cm³ single-cylinder unit developed to power the Desmo250 MX, the Italian brand’s motocross model. The unit stands out for combining compact dimensions, desmodromic valve control and the ability to rev up to 15,000 rpm, an unusual figure for a 250 cc off-road motorcycle.

The engine delivers 44.5 hp at 12,500 rpm and maximum torque of 28.3 Nm at 8,800 rpm. More than the absolute figures, Ducati emphasizes that the project was designed to offer usable power in different riding situations: starts, corner exits and sections where the rider needs to hold a gear for longer before shifting.

According to Ducati, the new single-cylinder engine uses bore and stroke measurements of 81 x 48.4 mm, the same as the Panigale V4 R. The difference is that, in this case, the formula was adapted for motocross, with a focus on quick response, traction and resistance to intense use on dirt tracks.

What draws the most attention in the package is the proposal of a compact and lightweight engine, weighing 24.7 kg, installed in a motorcycle created to compete in one of the most contested motocross categories. Ducati also developed an entirely new exhaust system, designed to improve performance and rideability without exceeding international noise limits in competitions.

What makes the desmodromic system special. Unlike conventional engines, in which the valves rely on springs to close, desmodromic technology uses more precise mechanical control for both opening and closing. This allows the engine to operate at very high revs with greater control, something important in a discipline where every tenth of a second can change the result.

The package also includes a 44 mm Mikuni throttle body, a five-speed gearbox developed specifically for the model, a quickshifter for upshifts and a Brembo hydraulic clutch with seven discs. The idea is to deliver progressive and consistent acceleration, even under the typical wear of motocross.

The new Desmo250 is not just a smaller engine: it represents the brand’s attempt to turn racing technology into a real advantage also on dirt tracks.
