
The United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force (RAF) is considering introducing aerial refueling capability using a rigid boom system (flying boom), after confirming that the future fighter developed under the GCAP program will use this system exclusively.
At present, the British tanker aircraft fleet operates only with the hose-and-drogue method, which means the new fighter will not be able to refuel in flight without changes to the existing infrastructure.

The challenge is not limited to GCAP. Several modern RAF aircraft, including the RC-135W Rivet Joint, P-8A Poseidon, C-17 Globemaster III, future E-7 Wedgetail, and recently acquired F-35A Lightning II, also use only the flying boom system. As a result, these aircraft often depend on support from United States Air Force tankers during joint operations.

The RAF’s current Airbus Voyager aircraft were configured exclusively for the hose-and-drogue system, although the A330 MRTT can be equipped with a refueling boom.
Experts argue that, rather than modifying the existing fleet, a more efficient alternative would be to replace the aircraft when the current contract expires in 2035, acquiring new tankers already equipped to operate with both systems.

Adopting the flying boom system would significantly improve the RAF’s interoperability with NATO allies and eliminate a limitation considered increasingly relevant to future British air operations.
Once GCAP enters service, the inability to refuel the main next-generation fighter could undermine the air force’s operational autonomy, making the modernization of the tanker aircraft fleet virtually unavoidable.
