An additional certification campaign was carried out in the Arkhangelsk region and evaluated the aircraft’s performance under real natural icing conditions.

OAK, the Russian aircraft manufacturer, has completed the additional certification testing program for the MS-21, SJ-100 and Il-114 aircraft under natural icing conditions in northern Russia. The campaign took place in the Arkhangelsk region, with flights over the coast of the White Sea, the Kola Peninsula and the Naryan-Mar area.

According to Rostec, the tests were conducted based on data from the meteorological service. During the missions, crews identified clouds with icing potential and entered these areas to monitor, using special equipment, the accumulation of ice on the aircraft surfaces.

After reaching the required ice thickness, the aircraft were taken to altitudes where their behavior under real natural icing conditions could be evaluated. Among the parameters analyzed were stability, maneuverability and the performance of onboard systems.

According to the Russian state company, the SJ-100 carried out nine flights within the additional natural icing certification program. The MS-21 completed six flights, while the Il-114 conducted eight missions. During the campaign, the aircraft remained between four and seven hours in flight over areas of the far north of Russia.

Rostec reported that the program was fully completed and that the results demonstrated that the MS-21, SJ-100 and Il-114 meet Russian and international aviation standards for operation in natural icing conditions.

In addition to tests in freezing environments, the SJ-100 also underwent go-around landings and checks of the stall warning system as part of the additional certification program.

With the completion of this stage, the MS-21 and the SJ-100 have already proceeded to Zhukovsky, on the outskirts of Moscow, where they will continue the main certification testing campaign. The Il-114 has also completed the checks in Arkhangelsk and is preparing to return.
