The Russian Federation took another important step in expanding its submarine fleet with the launch of the nuclear submarine Perm, the fifth of the 885M Yasen-M project. The official ceremony took place at the OSC Sevmash company, located in Severodvinsk, and was attended by naval industry and Navy authorities.

According to the publication Sudostroenie.info, the Perm will be the first submarine of the Yasen-M class permanently equipped with Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles, marking a strategic leap in the offensive capabilities of the Russian fleet.

The construction of the submarine began on July 29, 2016, and it is expected to be officially incorporated into the Russian Navy in 2026.

Constant progress in the Yasen-M fleet

The launch of the Perm follows the schedule observed with the Arkhangelsk, launched in 2016 and delivered to the fleet in January 2025, after sea trials started in 2024. The expectation is that the period between the launch and commissioning of the Perm will follow a similar pattern, between 1.5 and 2 years.
With a length of 130 meters and a width of 13 meters, the submarines of the Yasen-M project have a submerged displacement of 13,800 tons, a diving capacity of up to 480 meters in depth, and an underwater speed between 28 and 31 knots. The crew consists of approximately 90 sailors.

Firepower and technological innovation

In addition to the Zircon hypersonic missiles, the submarines of this class are compatible with Kalibr missiles, Onyx anti-ship missiles, and 533 mm torpedoes. Currently, nine Yasen-M submarines are part of the Russian Navy’s strategic plan:

  • Already commissioned: Kazan, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, and Arkhangelsk
  • Under construction: Perm, Ulyanovsk, Voronezh, and Vladivostok
  • Planned: Bratsk

With the progressive incorporation of these submarines, Russia aims to maintain its naval deterrence at a high level, especially in the Northern and Pacific fleets.
