A woman has warned about the risks of saving addresses in a car’s GPS, after sharing how a friend’s vehicle was stolen and the thief gained access to his house keys.
Sarah Kimberly shared the story on her TikTok profile, using the alarming situation to issue a security warning to other drivers.
“Stop saving your home address and other frequent destinations in your car’s GPS contacts, and I’ll explain why,” she began in the clip.
Kimberly said that her friend’s car was stolen while he was at work. His house keys were inside the vehicle, so the thief took those as well.
As a result, the thief not only had access to the car and all the keys but also discovered the man’s home address, which was saved in the car’s GPS. This was particularly worrying since his wife and young children were at home.
Fortunately, the man witnessed the theft and reacted quickly. He changed the garage remote, locks, and everything else necessary in his home before the thief could show up.
Indeed, the thief later appeared at his house to steal more. Being proactive and changing the locks and garage code immediately may have not only saved his belongings but also kept his family safe.
“Imagine having your car stolen, all your keys, and access to your home — and only realizing it a few hours later. Think about everything that could happen in those few hours,” Kimberly explained.
“Obviously, no one plans to have their car stolen, but simple actions like removing your home address from your car can help keep your family safe if the vehicle is ever stolen.”
In addition, Kimberly advised not leaving mail or letters with your address inside the car. “If you value safety over convenience, remove your home address from your car’s GPS. Now,” she concluded.
