In an Instagram post, which already has over 4 million likes, the pets’ owners explained that the idea to train them to drive small cars actually came from a 2019 study conducted by the University of Richmond in Virginia, USA.
In that research, scientists trained rats to drive small vehicles and found that for those animals, the experience of learning and mastering a new skill reduced their stress hormones.
They also mentioned in the post that it only took a few months of training, 5 to 10 minutes a day, for them to get the hang of the controls—just three simple pedals that make the car go right, left, and forward.
Since getting their little cars, Kuzko and Kronk have learned to drive, and their owners often share the duo’s “rides” around the house. Their performance behind the wheel has impressed internet users so much that some are even considering getting a rat as a pet.
Along with the praise, many people also made jokes after seeing the little animals driving: “Learned to drive faster than I did,” one person wrote.
“It would be amazing if they had the freedom to park the taxis in a garage and felt free to go for a drive whenever they wanted,” said another.
“This is so cute. Make one a police car with a siren and give the other a speeding ticket. Your rats are having a blast,” commented a third.
