The “Ivan Papanin” is the first ship of Project 23550, developed by the Almaz design bureau.

The vessel combines patrol, icebreaker, and tug functions, being capable of protecting and monitoring waterways in Arctic regions, escorting and towing ships, as well as participating in rescue missions and logistical support.

Named in honor of Soviet Arctic explorer and Rear Admiral Ivan Papanin, twice awarded Hero of the Soviet Union, the ship was laid down in April 2017, launched in October 2019, and now officially joins the Northern Fleet.
