The Presidency of Defense Industries of Turkey (SSB) has officially announced the start of mass production of the autonomous ground vehicle BARKAN, developed by the military technology company HAVELSAN. The system entered initial operation in 2023 and has since been improved through field tests and advanced simulations.
According to HAVELSAN’s statement, operational testing of BARKAN in real environments has significantly contributed to enhancing its capabilities and performance. The vehicle is designed to perform a variety of field tasks with high efficiency and autonomy.

With the SSB’s decision, HAVELSAN expanded its engineering team and integrated new subcontractors into the project to meet the growing production demand. The company also highlighted the extensive use of simulation technologies in the development of BARKAN, which enabled detailed testing beyond real operational environments.

Development Focused on Swarm Operations
HAVELSAN’s General Manager, Mehmet Akif Nacar, emphasized that BARKAN not only operates efficiently on its own but is also designed to work in coordination with other unmanned aerial and ground vehicles in swarm missions.
“BARKAN was developed to perform very well on its own but also to operate harmoniously with other unmanned systems in a swarm. Each contribution to the development of BARKAN is, in fact, a contribution to the capability of the swarm,” stated Nacar.
