Tesla has become the target of a class-action lawsuit involving thousands of drivers who claim they were “misled” by the company’s advertising related to its autopilot system.

The Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, Tesla’s autonomous driving technology, has already been the subject of several legal actions, including some collisions resulting in fatalities.

Now, Tesla drivers who purchased the FSD package have joined forces to sue the company over its “empty promises” regarding the system’s capabilities.

In 2016, Tesla stated that all vehicles produced from that point onward would have “all the hardware for full self-driving.”

However, in early 2025, even Elon Musk admitted that the Autopilot computer Hardware 3 (HW3) would not be capable of driving itself without supervision.

While he initially claimed Tesla would equip vehicles with new hardware capable of fully autonomous driving, 10 months have passed with no update on the matter.

The Australian class-action lawsuit, launched in February, already includes “thousands of Australians,” revealed Rebecca Jancauskas, director of the company leading the process.

“Tesla made promises about the safety, performance, and features of its vehicles, such as Full Self-Driving, but we found that many of these promises are not being fulfilled,” she told News Corp Australia.

The lawsuit seeks “a financial settlement that adequately compensates Australian consumers for what they thought they were getting but, in fact, did not receive.”
