The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program was developed by the U.S. Navy to create fast, agile, and modular warships capable of operating in coastal, or “littoral,” environments where larger vessels face limitations. Designed in two distinct classes—Freedom and Independence—the LCS was meant to carry interchangeable mission modules for tasks such as surface warfare, mine countermeasures, and anti-submarine operations. Despite its cutting-edge propulsion systems, high speed, and advanced automation allowing for small crews, the program faced recurring technical and structural issues, leading the Navy to scale back modularity plans and begin retiring some ships early. Even so, LCS vessels have played key roles in coastal patrols, regional presence missions, and testing emerging naval technologies.
