The Chinese amphibious assault ship Sichuan, the first of the Type 076 capable of carrying drones, is expected to soon begin open sea trials.
Recent images show that the electromagnetic catapult has been revealed and a radar system installed, indicating that the ship is ready for the new phase of evaluation. The Sichuan follows successful catapult and landing gear tests conducted on the aircraft carrier Fujian this month.
With a capacity for 1,000 marines and a 260-meter flight deck, larger than those on U.S. and Japanese amphibious ships, the Sichuan represents an advancement over its predecessor, the Type 075. The ship has more internal space for hangars and aircraft launch, as well as catapult and arresting systems similar to those used on the Fujian.
The Sichuan is seen as a strategic asset for the Chinese Navy in drone operations, including the GJ-11 Sharp Sword stealth combat drone, equipped with electronic warfare systems, guided munitions, and the capability to deploy aerial decoys in swarms.
Amphibious assault ships like the Type 076 could play an important role in any conflict involving Taiwan, whose reunification with China is not ruled out by Beijing, while the United States has committed to providing defense support to the island.
