In a video posted on his TikTok profile, Alex Rodrigues appeared sitting in the driver’s seat of an unspecified Cadillac model while holding the vehicle’s keys up in the air.
He then reached out to turn on the headlights. Suddenly, the car started, making both the mechanic and the cameraman burst out laughing. The video has already racked up more than 220 thousand views.
In the comments, users were equally shocked. “I’m not an expert, but I think a car shouldn’t do that,” admitted one TikTok user. “Call a priest,” joked another.
Despite jokes that the Cadillac might be “possessed,” the mechanic explained in the comments section that the issue originated from a failure in the body control module (BCM).
The BCM manages everything from lighting and wipers to door locks and ignition logic. If everything is working as it should, the BCM can normally communicate with the systems needed to manage these functions.
But if a module fails, often due to heat, age, corrosion, or the use of a low-quality second-hand part, it can send voltage to places where it shouldn’t.
That’s why, in the case of the Cadillac presented by Rodrigues, turning on the headlights appears to have sent a false ignition or start signal through the faulty module, causing the engine to start.
It’s worth noting that this problem is not exclusive to Cadillac. Owners of Nissan, Toyota, and Ford vehicles have also reported similar issues over the years.
