MBDA UK integrates MANPADS missiles into Raven 5 to strengthen defense against drones

MBDA UK has unveiled a new evolution of the Raven 5 air defense system by integrating missiles derived from portable MANPADS systems, expanding its ability to counter modern threats, especially drones.

The new configuration was revealed during the Farnborough International Airshow 2026, where the company displayed a version equipped with two missiles from the future Italian Fulgur system, developed by MBDA Italia to replace the older Stinger missiles used by the Italian Army.

The Fulgur was designed to provide a more modern short-range air defense solution. Weighing approximately 10 kg, with a diameter of 70 millimeters and an effective range of up to five kilometers, the missile is expected to enter serial production later this year, with the Italian Army becoming its first operator following the signing of a procurement contract in 2025.

The new Raven 5 configuration also represents an advance over the model currently used by Ukraine. The system can now carry four ready-to-fire missiles instead of only two, while also featuring a mobile launcher and compatibility with lower-cost weapons. The Raven’s operational performance has already been demonstrated in combat, where ASRAAM missiles achieved a hit rate of around 70% across approximately 400 launches conducted in Ukraine.

Developed in just four months at the initiative of the British Royal Air Force, the Raven combines ASRAAM missiles installed on the Supercat HMT-600 platform, which is equipped with the passive Hawkeye EO system, capable of detecting and engaging targets without emitting radar signals. At the same time, MBDA UK is also studying the adaptation of ASRAAM missiles for other air defense platforms, including the Rapier system and containerized launchers, further expanding the potential applications of the weapon.
