Japan has begun factory sea trials for the LCU 4151 Nihonbare, the first of a series of four transport ships ordered for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. The trials took place on February 18 at the Naikai Zosen shipyard in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture.
Although classified as a “small transport ship,” the LCU 4151 Nihonbare is actually a medium-sized landing ship with a standard displacement of 2,400 tons, a length of 80 meters, a width of 17 meters, and a top speed of 15 knots. The vessel was launched on October 29, 2024.

Expansion of the Self-Defense Forces Transport Fleet
The LCU 4151 Nihonbare will be the first operational unit of the Self-Defense Forces Maritime Transport Group (provisional name), which is expected to be established in March 2025 at the Kure base. The primary mission of this new naval force is to ensure the rapid transfer of troops to disputed islands in the East China Sea, strengthening Japan’s response capabilities in times of crisis.
According to Japanese authorities, the group’s fleet will gradually expand, and by March 2028, it will consist of ten transport ships, including:
- Four “small” transport ships of the Nihonbare class
- Two “medium” transport ships of the 120-meter Yohkoh class (the first, LSV 4101 Yohkoh, was launched on November 29, 2024)
- Four Maneuver Support Vessels (MSV), small landing craft designed for logistics and rapid transport operations

In addition to these military vessels, in case of crisis, civilian ships could also be mobilized to expand transport and logistical support capacity.
The creation of this group reflects Japan’s efforts to strengthen its maritime defense and ensure greater strategic mobility in areas of geopolitical interest, especially in light of increasing regional tensions in the Indo-Pacific.
