Crafter-based motorhome receives a photovoltaic system, greater energy capacity, new driver assistance systems, and a multimedia center with a screen of up to 12 inches
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has announced a new update for the Grand California, a factory-built motorhome based on the Crafter van. The lineup now offers a package aimed at trips far from campsites and power outlets, combining roof-mounted solar panels with two lithium iron phosphate batteries, known by the acronym LiFePO₄.
The main change is in the electrical system of the living area. Instead of the conventional 92 Ah AGM battery, buyers will be able to choose two LiFePO₄ batteries or a complete package that also adds solar power generation.

According to the manufacturer, the effectively usable capacity increases by almost 40%, rising from approximately 46 Ah with the AGM setup to around 64 Ah with the two lithium batteries. Although the nominal capacity appears similar, LiFePO₄ batteries allow a larger portion of the stored energy to be used without compromising durability.
Another advantage is service life. Volkswagen says the new batteries can withstand about five times more charge and discharge cycles than AGM units, while also featuring protection against deep discharge.
The motorhome’s secondary electrical system also accepts recharge currents of up to 200 amps, which can reduce the time needed to recover the energy used by lighting, the refrigerator, outlets, and other equipment installed in the vehicle.
Solar panels vary according to the version

The Grand California 600 receives a photovoltaic system with a maximum output of 104 watts, while the Grand California 680 uses a 174-watt setup.
The panels can generate electricity even while the vehicle is moving. In ECO mode, the vehicle prioritizes charging from solar energy, reducing the need to use external sources or the vehicle’s own charging system.
In practice, the setup extends electric autonomy during long stops in places without infrastructure, although the duration of independence varies according to lighting conditions, weather, and the consumption of the internal equipment.
In Germany, replacing the AGM batteries with LiFePO₄ units costs from €833. The package with lithium batteries and solar panels starts at €1,719.55 for the Grand California 600 and €2,326.45 for the Grand California 680.
New assistance systems and screen of up to 12 inches
The update also includes changes to the driver assistance systems. Fatigue monitoring becomes part of the standard equipment, analyzing driving behavior to identify possible signs of tiredness.
Among the optional features is the intersection assistant, developed to help the driver at intersections and during urban maneuvers, situations that can be more challenging in a vehicle with the dimensions of the Grand California.
The cabin also receives new multimedia systems with screens of up to 12 inches, smartphone integration, and access to connected services.
Interior receives “Atami Bamboo” finish
In the living area, the Grand California now uses the interior finish called “Atami Bamboo”, which combines bamboo-look surfaces with light-toned elements.
Volkswagen has also revised some functional components, including new storage spaces and a table with different possibilities of use. The goal is to improve the use of the space during meals, work, and rest periods.
The Grand California remains available in two configurations. The Grand California 600 is the more compact option and uses a transverse bed installed at the rear. The Grand California 680 offers a longer body and longitudinally positioned beds.
Both versions are produced by Volkswagen itself on the current generation of the Crafter, bringing together the cabin, structure, and motorhome installation in a single factory project.
With the new energy package, Volkswagen aims to make the Grand California better suited to long trips and stays in remote locations, a segment that has been gaining ground among consumers interested in road tourism with greater autonomy.
