The German Air Force conducted a combat air patrol on September 4, following the detection of drones near Romania’s border with Ukraine.

According to Romania’s Ministry of Defence, radar surveillance systems identified the drones 36 nautical miles (about 66 km) northeast of Sulina during the night. In response, two Eurofighter Typhoon jets took off from Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base 57 to monitor the situation.

Romanian authorities reported that shortly after radar contact, the drones changed course northward and their electronic signals disappeared. The German fighters continued to monitor the area before returning to base.

The operation is part of NATO’s joint security measures to reinforce the protection of Romanian airspace, a country that shares a direct border with Ukraine, amid escalating threats in the Black Sea.
