Germany has launched a new military deployment to strengthen NATO’s defensive posture in Eastern Europe.

Five Eurofighter Typhoon jets and around 150 service members from Tactical Air Wing 31 “Boelcke”, along with additional support units, have been sent to Malbork Air Base in Poland, taking over the Atlantic Alliance’s Air Policing mission.

The detachment integrates NATO’s continuous readiness through the Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) system, which operates 24 hours a day to ensure allied airspace remains safe, monitored, and protected against unidentified or non-cooperative aircraft.

According to the commander of the German detachment, identified by the callsign “Colonel”, the operation reinforces Berlin’s firm commitment to collective security: “Our deployment to Poland highlights Germany’s unwavering commitment to the shared security of the Euro-Atlantic area. We are ready to work side by side with our Polish partners for the next four months.”

During the mission, Luftwaffe pilots and ground crews will work in close cooperation with the Polish Air Force and NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC) in Uedem, which coordinates all air policing activities in the region. Regular training with allied forces will keep the Eurofighters prepared to respond quickly to any potential threat.

The deployment to Poland represents Germany’s second simultaneous Air Policing detachment in 2025. Since April, another five German Eurofighters have been leading NATO’s enhanced mission from Mihail Kogălniceanu, in Romania.

The operation is part of Eastern Sentry, an enhanced surveillance activity that strengthens the protection of NATO’s eastern flank with a flexible posture adapted to evolving security conditions.

With this move, Germany reaffirms its central role in collective defense, deterrence, and interoperability among allies, reinforcing the strength and integration that underpin security in the Euro-Atlantic region.
