France has taken a significant step in modernizing its air alert capability by formalizing the contract for two Saab GlobalEye aircraft, with an option for two more, in a deal valued at $1.35 billion.

The decision consolidates the choice of the Swedish system following the signing of a Letter of Intent at the 2025 Paris Air Show and aims to preserve an airborne radar capability considered essential for deterrence and national defense. Deliveries are scheduled between 2029 and 2032.

The GlobalEye has been selected to directly replace the four E-3F Sentry AWACS currently operated by the French Air and Space Force from Base 702 in Avord.

To avoid operational gaps until the new platforms arrive, Paris opted to extend the service life of the E-3Fs by signing a ten-year contract with KLM Engineering & Maintenance to sustain the fleet until at least 2035. During the transition period, France will operate two different types of airborne early warning aircraft simultaneously.

In addition to its national impact, the French choice comes in a context of reduced European air surveillance capabilities, especially after changes in allied programs. Equipped with the AESA Erieye radar, the GlobalEye offers detection of airborne, maritime, and ground targets at long ranges and is expected to strengthen both France’s autonomy and Europe’s contribution to airspace surveillance. The program also includes local industrial cooperation, with French companies involved in modifying and maintaining the aircraft.
