NATO carried out a historic flight this week by conducting the first AWACS aircraft mission in Finnish airspace.
The operation strengthens the country’s integration into the Alliance and expands allied surveillance across the High North and along the eastern flank.
The mission represents a milestone in NATO air operations following Finland’s accession to the Alliance. The flight was coordinated by the Joint Force Command Norfolk (JFCNF), which worked to ensure seamless integration between international military assets and Finnish civilian air traffic control authorities.
First operation in Finnish airspace
Under mission control of Allied Air Command (AIRCOM), the NATO Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft acted as the air battle space manager. During the operation, the platform worked in close coordination with the Finnish Control and Reporting Centre in Rovaniemi and the Air Operations Centre in Jyväskylä.
The activity also included the participation of eight Finnish F/A-18 fighter jets, involved in a 4-versus-4 air mission that demonstrated the integration between Finland’s national systems and NATO’s operational capabilities.

Reinforced presence in the High North
The missions were carried out under the scope of the Eastern Sentry and Arctic Sentry activities, which provide critical long-range radar surveillance as well as command-and-control capabilities for the Alliance.
According to Air Commodore Andy Turk, Chief of Staff of NAEW, the operation highlighted the importance of allied presence in the region.
“Operating in Finnish airspace for the first time demonstrates our collective commitment to security in the High North. The flexibility of our AWACS fleet is made possible by established procedures and the close contacts we share with our Finnish Allies. We are truly stronger together.”
Rapid integration after Finland’s accession
According to NATO, the mission also demonstrates how quickly Finland has been integrated into the Alliance’s operational structure. By establishing clear communication channels and shared procedures, AIRCOM enhances the flexibility required for complex air operations in strategically sensitive environments.
Major General Arnfinn Frode Kristoffersen, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations at JFCNF, noted that the operation strengthens shared situational awareness between NATO and Finland.
“We successfully coordinated NATO’s first AWACS mission in Finnish airspace under the command of Arctic Sentry. This demonstrates how quickly the Alliance can integrate new Allies into our operational framework.”
AWACS remains a key element of NATO air defense
The E-3A AWACS continues to be one of the main platforms of NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence. Its ability to conduct long-endurance missions allows allied commanders to maintain a continuous and clear view of the air domain, especially in strategically sensitive areas.
The presence of the aircraft ensures a permanent link between the national security of Alliance members and NATO’s collective defense, reinforcing military readiness in northern Europe.
