The operation, dubbed “Spider Web“, targeted aircraft with nuclear potential, causing significant military impact.

Russia classified the attack as a terrorist act. The targeted bases are located more than 4,000 km from the front line, surprising many with the boldness and reach. The drones caused fires and damage at air bases in the Irkutsk region and in northern cities such as Murmansk.

According to Ukraine, 34% of Russia’s strategic missile-carrying aircraft fleet was destroyed, with losses estimated at more than US$ 7 billion.

Based on the Il-76, the Beriev A-50 is an airborne early warning and control aircraft used as a command center in the sky. It features a radar mounted above the fuselage capable of detecting threats at long distances and coordinating military operations.

With around 40 units manufactured up until 1992, these aircraft are essential for monitoring and controlling airspace. Their destruction seriously weakens Russia’s air defense and surveillance capabilities.

Created in the late 1960s, the Tu-22M is a long-range supersonic bomber capable of exceeding 2,300 km/h. Designed for Cold War operations, it was produced between 1972 and 1993, with nearly 500 units built.

Before the attack, only 27 were in operation, according to Ukraine. Already used in bombings against Ukrainian territory, the Tu-22M is a key element in Russia’s power projection beyond its borders.

First flown in 1952, the Tu-95 is a long-range strategic bomber that remains in service today. Equipped with turboprop engines and a range of 8,000 km, it was developed to carry large war payloads, including nuclear weapons.

It was a Tu-95 that dropped the Tsar Bomba, the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated. Despite its age, the aircraft has been modernized and was still used in attacks on Ukraine, maintaining a strategic role in Russia’s air force.
