With U.S. certification, Sweden’s Täby Air Maintenance (TAM) can now offer its Saab 2000 freighter conversion in the United States market, strengthening the turboprop’s presence in regional logistics and express parcel operations.

The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has certified the Swedish company Täby Air Maintenance (TAM) program to convert the Saab 2000 from a passenger aircraft into a freighter.

The approval represents a significant step for the project, which had already received a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) from EASA at the end of 2025 and now gains formal access to the U.S. market.

Developed in partnership with Jetstream Aviation Capital, the launch customer of the program, the modification positions the Saab 2000 as a high-performance option for regional logistics, e-commerce, and time-sensitive cargo operations. According to the companies, the converted model delivers greater capacity and sector speeds up to 30% higher than those of the Saab 340 freighter, increasing operational range and fleet productivity.

Among the main changes in the package are a reinforced carbon fiber floor, an integrated roller loading system, and a cargo compartment with a total volume of 55.4 cubic meters.

The maximum structural payload for the conversion is listed at 6,622 kg, although in operations under U.S. Part 135 regulations, payload is limited to 3,402 kg.

TAM had launched the Saab 2000 freighter program in 2022, and the prototype’s first flight took place on March 6, 2023, in Örebro, Sweden.

At the time, the company presented the initiative as a natural evolution of its experience with the Saab 340F, a conversion it had already been offering to the market for several years.

With FAA certification secured, the project gains momentum just as the first Saab 2000 delivered to U.S. operator Sterling begins to establish a presence in the American market.

The delivery, announced by TAM and Empterwik, was presented as a milestone to expand the Saab 2000 platform’s presence in North America, now with prospects for new commercial placements in the regional cargo segment.
