Finnair and Embraer announced on Monday, March 23, 2026, an agreement for up to 46 E195-E2 aircraft, in one of the most significant decisions by the Finnish airline for renewing its short-haul fleet.
The package includes 18 firm orders, 16 options, and 12 purchase rights. The new aircraft will be used to replace older jets in Finnair’s fleet and support the company’s strategy focused on profitable growth, greater operational efficiency, and emissions reduction.
Largest investment in Finnair’s recent history
According to Finnair CEO Turkka Kuusisto, the purchase represents one of the most important moves ever made by the company in its 102-year history.
“This is one of the largest investments in Finnair’s 102-year history and a vital step in our strategy. The Embraer E2 will allow us to strengthen our European network and capture market growth opportunities, while enhancing our competitiveness through reliability, versatility, and a high level of customer comfort. Importantly, this investment also reduces our CO2 footprint, advancing our climate targets,” the executive said.
The selected model is the E195-E2, a new-generation aircraft from the Brazilian manufacturer that has been gaining ground among airlines looking to reduce costs, improve passenger experience, and operate more efficiently on regional and European routes.
E195-E2 promises lower fuel burn, less noise, and more comfort
According to Embraer, the E195-E2 was chosen for its superior efficiency, high reliability, and strong passenger appeal. The manufacturer highlights that the aircraft is currently the quietest single-aisle jet available and can be up to 35% more fuel-efficient than the previous generation E190s currently operated by Finnair.
Another differentiator is the cabin layout with no middle seats, along with lower internal noise levels. For Finnair, this helps align fleet modernization with environmental goals and an improved travel experience.
“Embraer is honored to support Finnair’s exciting next chapter. The unique combination of efficiency, comfort, and reliability of the E195-E2 delivers significant value — lower fuel consumption, lower CO₂ emissions, and superior economics. We look forward to helping Finnair modernize its short-haul fleet to better meet demand, reduce emissions, and drive growth,” said Arjan Meijer, President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation.
Deliveries begin in 2027
Finnair’s aircraft will be configured with 134 seats, and the first deliveries are scheduled for the second half of 2027. The agreement will also be included in Embraer’s order backlog in the first quarter of 2026.
