General Motors has announced the recall of more than 23,000 units of the Chevrolet Corvette in the United States, involving the Z06 (2023-2026) and ZR1 (2025-2026) models, after identifying a fire risk during refueling.

The measure follows customer reports, including a video showing a 2024 Corvette Z06 catching fire while refueling at a gas station, completely destroying the vehicle.

According to GM, the issue is related to a design flaw that can cause excess gasoline to leak into the engine, increasing the risk of fire. The situation is under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which has already linked four fires to the defect.

The company has developed a safeguard to prevent gasoline from being blown toward the engine and plans to begin distributing the part in the coming weeks. In the meantime, owners are advised not to overfill the tank and to ensure the pump nozzle is fully inserted before refueling.

The Corvette Z06 is equipped with a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8 engine producing 680 hp, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds, with a price tag of around US$120,000. The Corvette ZR1, with a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8, delivers 1,064 hp and reaches up to 374 km/h, starting at US$183,000. Combustion-powered Stingray models and the hybrid E-Ray are not included in the recall.
