Austria has formalized an investment of $1.74 billion to acquire 12 M-346FA jets, with deliveries expected in 2028.
The agreement will allow the country to restore its advanced training capacity and low-intensity operations, which were lost since the retirement of the Saab 105 in 2020. According to the Ministry of Defense, the project includes simulators, armaments, and industrial support estimated at $464 million for the local economy.
With the arrival of the M-346FA, Austria will implement its two-fleet strategy, combining the aerial surveillance capability of the Eurofighter with the new light jet for training and patrol missions. The government states that the model will also allow for the resumption of domestic pilot training, reducing costs and strengthening operational sovereignty. The chosen variant maintains combat capabilities and integration with systems such as IRIS-T, Link 16, and SPEAR electronic pods.
The contract also includes the option to expand the fleet to 24 aircraft, as well as future upgrades to the Block 20 standard, which will add a revised digital cockpit, new tactical systems, and AESA radar. Despite previous debates about replacing the Eurofighter, the Ministry has confirmed that both models will continue to operate complementarily.
This decision ends years of uncertainty and reshapes Austria’s air defense architecture for the next decade.
