The inaugural flight took place on September 27 at Airbus’s Donauwörth factory, just nine months after signing the contract in December 2023.
The Bundeswehr’s choice of the H145M reflects a pragmatic decision, as Germany opted for a multifunctional helicopter that can be delivered more quickly and at a significantly lower cost compared to the Apache AH-64E or the Tiger, both of which are more expensive and complex models.
The H145M was selected to replace part of these aircraft, providing a more agile and efficient solution.
Speed of delivery is one of the project’s standout features, with the Bundeswehr receiving the first unit just nine months after the contract was signed. The plan includes the delivery of one more H145M by the end of this year, followed by 4 units in 2025, 18 in 2026, 18 in 2027, and 17 in 2028. A total of 62 H145M helicopters will be delivered, with an option for 20 additional units, bringing the total to 82 by 2029.
While the H145M does not possess the same combat capabilities as the AH-64E Apache, it stands out for its versatility and advanced technology. Equipped with modern, high-precision weapons such as Spike anti-tank missiles, the H145M also has the capability to fire APKWS guided rockets and similar weapons, thanks to its optical targeting system.
Additionally, Airbus has announced the inclusion of drone control capabilities, making it even more effective on the modern battlefield.
Germany’s decision to invest in the H145M represents a strategy that balances cost, delivery speed, and operational capability, strengthening the modernization of its armed forces with reliable, ready-to-use technology.
