McLaren has revealed a faithful reconstruction of the M6GT, the first road car project envisioned by the brand’s founder, Bruce McLaren, in the late 1960s.

According to Car and Driver, the model will make its public debut during the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed next Thursday (9), reviving a little-known chapter in the history of the British manufacturer.

The M6GT was born as an evolution of the M6A racing car and was part of Bruce McLaren’s plans to transform the racing team into a supercar manufacturer.

The project, however, was interrupted after the driver and entrepreneur died in 1970 during testing at Goodwood, and only a few prototypes were ever built.

The reconstruction was carried out by the McLaren Special Operations (MSO) division, which used an original M6A chassis, body molds discovered in the company’s archives, restored parts, and hand-crafted components to reproduce the car as faithfully as possible.

The sports car also received a period-correct Chevrolet V8 small-block engine, paired with a five-speed manual transmission.

In addition to the mechanical components, McLaren recreated historical details such as the seats upholstered in green vinyl, the wooden gearshift knob, and the Colnbrook White paintwork, inspired by the former factory where Bruce McLaren developed the original project.

According to the manufacturer, the restoration marks the beginning of an initiative focused on preserving its historical heritage and pays tribute to the founder’s vision of bringing track experience to road cars.
