Airbus Helicopters has revealed new details about the Tiger MkIII program, a broad modernization of the Tiger attack helicopters operated by France and Spain.

According to The Aviationist, the mid-life upgrade (MLU) project aims to adapt the aircraft to the demands of modern conflicts, incorporating new sensors, weapons and digital systems inspired by lessons observed in recent wars, including the conflict in Ukraine.

One of the main milestones announced by the manufacturer was the commissioning of the so-called “helicopter zero“, a ground-based test platform that will be used to validate the new systems before the first flight of the modernized version, expected to take place later in 2026.

Among the new features of the Tiger MkIII are a fully digital cockpit with touchscreen displays, a new helmet with an integrated visor, long-range Euroflir 510 electro-optical sensors and a completely renewed electronic architecture to increase processing and data-sharing capabilities.

The aircraft will also be capable of operating alongside drones, allowing crews to receive real-time information from unmanned systems during combat missions. According to Airbus, this integration capability will be essential for operations in highly contested environments marked by intense electronic warfare.

In the field of weapons, the upgrade includes the introduction of the French Missile Air-Sol Tactique Futur (MAST-F), developed to replace the current AGM-114 Hellfire, along with other improvements to guided rockets, air-to-surface weapons and target acquisition systems.

The program is being conducted by Airbus in partnership with the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR). The first operational deliveries are expected by the end of the decade.
