Italian manufacturer IDV, controlled by Leonardo, presented during the Eurosatory 2026 exhibition in Paris a new uncrewed light tank developed to operate alongside conventional armored vehicles in combat operations.

Named CL2X, the vehicle is part of the defense industry’s growing focus on autonomous systems capable of increasing combat power while reducing soldiers’ exposure in high-risk areas.

The CL2X uses hybrid propulsion that combines electric motors and a generator to recharge the batteries during operation. Weighing 16 tons, with a range of up to 500 kilometers and a maximum speed of 70 km/h, the armored vehicle can also operate in silent mode for about 30 kilometers, making it harder to detect on the battlefield. Equipped with a 30 mm cannon, the system was designed to provide fire support, engage ground targets, and neutralize drones.

In addition to the new tank, the company displayed a modernized version of the VIKING robotic vehicle, which received improvements in mobility, electric autonomy, and surveillance capability. The model can be configured for counter-drone missions or for the use of guided missiles against armored vehicles and other strategic targets, expanding the operational flexibility of ground forces.

According to IDV, the rapid evolution of modern threats is accelerating the adoption of uncrewed vehicles by NATO armed forces. The company also highlighted its autonomy and navigation systems, which allow operation even in environments where GPS signals are unavailable. The proposal is to modernize existing vehicles by incorporating autonomous capabilities without requiring the complete replacement of current fleets.
