Project led by NAVAIR with industrial partners upgraded the avionics, electrical systems and navigation of an aircraft that once served in U.S. presidential missions before being transferred to Egypt.

The United States Navy, through the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), has completed the modernization of a VH-3A Sea King helicopter historically linked to American presidential missions and is preparing to return the aircraft to the Egyptian Air Force.

The work was carried out by the PMA-226 program office, responsible for adversary and specialized aircraft, in partnership with the NAVAIR Security Cooperation Office and Clayton International.

According to the official statement, the project was completed in February 2026 and aimed to upgrade an asset considered relevant to Egyptian aviation, while also reinforcing bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

According to NAVAIR, the modernized aircraft is BuNo 150615, an example with strong historical value. The helicopter was originally delivered to the U.S. Marine Corps to support presidential missions during the administrations of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon. In 1974, during Nixon’s visit to Egypt, the aircraft was presented to President Anwar Sadat as a diplomatic gesture, becoming part of Egyptian aviation.

The recent refurbishment combined an older airframe with contemporary systems. Among the upgrades cited by NAVAIR are a new electrical architecture, a modern avionics suite with a glass cockpit layout, as well as improvements in communications and navigation.

On February 2, 2026, the Egyptian Air Force carried out an acceptance check flight to validate the helicopter’s performance after the modernization.

After the final installation of a custom VIP interior, the VH-3A is expected to be transported back to Egypt, where it will resume service. For NAVAIR, the delivery also serves as a symbol of the continuity of the defense partnership between Washington and Cairo, combining historical value with updated operational capability.

The VH-3A Sea King is an executive transport variant derived from the Sikorsky H-3 Sea King family, originally developed for naval missions. According to NAVAIR itself, the VH-3A was a modified version for short-range presidential transport, preceding the VH-3D in that role. Official records and historical documentation of the aircraft indicate that only eight VH-3A examples were built for this VIP transport role, which helps explain the symbolic and historical relevance of the example being returned to Egypt.
