A small air taxi from Joby Aviation was spotted flying over the San Francisco Bay near the Golden Gate Bridge during a demonstration flight on Thursday (12).

The test flight is part of the company’s effort to introduce electric air taxis.

Joby’s aircraft has four passenger seats and uses six propellers. According to the company, taxi rides could cost between US$100 and US$170.

Joby Aviation is one of several companies in the electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (eVTOL) market conducting tests in U.S. cities.

Joby Aviation was selected by the U.S. Department of Transportation to participate in a federal pilot program aimed at accelerating the deployment of eVTOL aircraft.

Commercial flights are expected to begin operating as early as 2026 in states such as New York, Texas, Florida and California.

During the demonstration, the taxi took off from Oakland and crossed the bay at about 160 km/h, circling near the Golden Gate Bridge before returning.

Joby says its aircraft operates more quietly than a helicopter and was designed to fly at around 300 meters.
