The United Kingdom has decided to strengthen its military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean by deploying the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon and Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters, in a move aimed at reinforcing air defense and counter-drone capabilities in the region.

According to the British Ministry of Defence, HMS Dragon will deploy to the area with the mission of protecting British interests and supporting the collective self-defense of allies. The ship is equipped with the Sea Viper air defense system, capable of launching multiple missiles in rapid succession and guiding several of them simultaneously against aerial threats.

Type 45 destroyers have already demonstrated their operational capability in previous missions. In 2024, one of these vessels carried out a real interception of a hostile missile during operations in the Middle East.

The decision to send the destroyer follows a series of defensive actions carried out by British forces over the past 24 hours in different parts of the Middle East.

F-35B fighters from the Royal Air Force (RAF) shot down drones over Jordan, marking the first time a British F-35 has destroyed a target in real operations. The mission was supported by Typhoon fighters and a Voyager aerial refueling aircraft.

In another action, a British unit specialized in counter-drone warfare neutralized unmanned aircraft in Iraqi airspace that were heading toward coalition forces.

Meanwhile, a RAF Typhoon fighter operating with the joint UK–Qatar 12 Squadron shot down an Iranian one-way attack drone heading toward Qatar using an air-to-air missile.

In addition to HMS Dragon, two Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters will also be deployed to the region. The aircraft are equipped with Martlet missiles designed to detect, track and neutralize aerial threats — especially drones.

The presence of these helicopters adds another layer to the British forces’ counter-drone defense system in the region.

United Kingdom reinforces military presence in the region

UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated that the decision to reinforce the military presence was made quickly in response to the escalation of threats.

According to him, HMS Dragon provides “world-class air defense capability,” while Wildcat helicopters armed with Martlet missiles help address the growing use of drones in conflict scenarios.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the new deployments are primarily aimed at protecting British personnel and interests, as well as contributing to regional stability at a time of rising tensions in the Middle East.
