The new EC-2 Stand-Off Jammer (SOJ) aircraft, based on the Kawasaki C-2 transport aircraft, was recently spotted at Gifu Air Base in Japan.

According to the website The Aviationist, the image was taken by Mel Amahashi last Tuesday (17). In the photo, the EC-2 aircraft appears in the distance, while a Kawasaki P-1 maritime patrol aircraft is seen taking off.
The new platform is derived from the C-2 transport aircraft manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI). As seen in the image, the aircraft has been modified with a bulbous nose, similar to that of the EC-1.
The aircraft also features two large protrusions on the top of the fuselage, while two others are believed to be located on the sides of the fuselage, between the wings and the horizontal stabilizers.
It is worth noting that another C-2, designated 18-1202, was previously modified with similar but smaller protrusions for signals intelligence (SIGINT) missions and conducted its first flight in 2018 under the new designation RC-2.
Until now, the secret aircraft had only been shown in a rendering shared by Japan’s Ministry of Defense. These are therefore the first photos of the real aircraft.
Previously, Japan’s Ministry of Defense stated that the aircraft will be used to support air counterattack operations in coordination with other tactical assets.
According to The Aviationist, the EC-2 Stand-Off Jammer (SOJ) is being developed to disrupt an adversary’s electronic warfare (EW) capabilities while operating outside the threat range. The aircraft will replace the EC-1, which has been in service since 1986.
