A woman posted a story after nearly becoming a victim of the ‘insurance scam,’ which happens when someone intentionally crashes into another car in an attempt to claim insurance for the accident.
Clee Mazzulla posted a video on TikTok to share that, recently, she managed to avoid a car accident while driving at about 80 km/h on an avenue in Austin, Texas (USA).
According to her, a black car that had been hit was stopped in the middle of the street, and as she was getting closer, the car suddenly swerved into her lane. “I had to make a sharp maneuver to [avoid them],” she explained.
Mazzulla said she was almost certain she was going to hit the vehicle, but fortunately, she managed to successfully dodge it. The maneuver was so impressive that other drivers stopped at the next traffic light to check if she was okay.
The incident left her completely shaken. When she stopped at the light, she was crying and shaking, struggling to process how close she had come to a potentially fatal side collision.
Other drivers informed her that the black car had been stopped in the street for about five minutes before it suddenly swerved in front of her. To them, the incident seemed intentional, not accidental.
Later, Mazzulla’s boyfriend connected the incident to auto insurance scams, which have become frequent in Texas. She had also seen news reports about people intentionally staging accidents to get insurance payouts.
The fact that someone would intentionally cause a potentially fatal accident just to make money completely shocked her. “It’s ridiculous,” Mazzulla said in the clip.
Finally, she issued a warning to other drivers in Austin and urged them to put their phones down and pay attention to the road.
Mazzulla’s video has already accumulated over 50,000 views and several comments from users who reported having similar experiences recently.
“This happened to me a few days ago! It was a black car, but on Highway 35, going from Mueller to downtown. They suddenly stopped in the middle of the highway and I could barely avoid them,” wrote one TikTok user.
Many users recommended installing a dashboard camera to capture incidents like this. “As an auto insurance expert, please buy a car camera!” commented another.
“My husband installed a car camera in my car because, I swear, people are driving more and more recklessly,” added a third user.
