Industrial designer Charles Bombardier, grandson of the founder of BRP (responsible for Sea-Doo, Can-Am, and Ski-Doo brands), introduced a concept for a stealth and autonomous maritime drone called “Sea-Drone 88 (SD-88)”.

Based on the Sea-Doo RXT-X personal watercraft, the vehicle is equipped with a 325-horsepower engine, but with no handlebars or seat, adapted to carry surveillance and communication technology. The goal is to use it for coastal patrols, sensitive rivers, and Arctic regions, offering a silent, modular, and unmanned alternative to traditional operations.

The project plans to use electric or hybrid propulsion to ensure discretion, thermal imaging cameras, satellite or LTE communication, a Kevlar-reinforced hull, and compartments for special equipment. Charles also proposes specific versions such as the SD-88 Tactical for night surveillance, SD-44 Arctic for cold environments, and SD-COMMS for mobile communication. He argues that, given the high costs and risks of patrols with personnel, in addition to the limitations of current sensors, drones like this could fill gaps in border and strategic zone security.

Although still just a concept, Bombardier has shared the idea on social media and in the Canadian press, suggesting he aims to attract the attention of authorities interested in innovative and accessible defense and surveillance solutions.

The project’s feasibility remains uncertain, but it reflects an increasing effort to apply design and technology to modernize national security.
