Through its passive safety division, the company has developed a design that integrates a screen into the steering wheel of the future while maintaining the airbag, which now inflates from the top edge, freeing up space in the center of the wheel for a smartphone-like interface or multiple touch displays.
ZF Lifetec suggests that the steering wheel could have a hybrid configuration, combining a rotary knob with touch surfaces, facilitating the inclusion of additional sensors for semi-autonomous driving systems.
These sensors would improve safety by detecting if the driver is paying attention to the road. The company is also investigating whether it is possible to maintain a round steering wheel with this technology or if the top part needs to be flat.
