A drunk woman was arrested after using her Tesla’s autopilot to sleep at the wheel while the car drove itself along an interstate highway in Florida (USA).

The incident occurred in the early hours of last Friday (24), when Kimberly Brown, 37, was found asleep at the wheel with her car stopped in the middle lane of Interstate 75 in Sarasota, according to police.

Her car stopped on its own after Tesla’s autopilot system detected that the driver’s eyes were not paying attention to the road during the trip.

It is worth noting that, although the system is commercially called “autopilot,” Tesla emphasizes that the feature must be used under constant driver supervision.

Brown was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. “This was extremely dangerous. She should not have been behind the wheel,” said Kenn Watson, a Florida Highway Patrol officer, to WWSB.

“Unfortunately, she was intoxicated at more than twice the legal limit and assumed the Tesla would take her home safely,” Watson added. The incident remains under investigation, according to police.
