Volvo has decided to breathe new life into the XC90 with a second facelift, ensuring that the gasoline SUV remains relevant even with the launch of the all-electric EX90.
The new facelift of the XC90, which follows the 2019 update, brings subtle changes such as a redesigned grille, headlights with a new LED signature, and an updated front bumper with vertical air intakes. At the rear, the shape of the taillights has been retained, but the light pattern has been renewed. The SUV, which is already 10 years old, retains its robust and modern appearance.
Inside, Volvo has made more significant changes. The previous 9-inch infotainment screen has been replaced by a larger 11.2-inch one, which stands out on the dashboard like a tablet and features a 21% higher pixel density. This new setup makes it easier to access apps and controls with shortcuts on the home screen, aligning the XC90 with the experience of newer Volvo models.
Additionally, the cabin has been enhanced with extra acoustic insulation, new decorative finishes made from recycled materials, and increased storage space in the center console.
Powertrain options have also been revised, with the plug-in hybrid T8 offering an electric range of about 69 km in electric mode on the WLTP cycle and around 800 km considering the gasoline tank. Additionally, versions with mild hybrid B5 and B6 engines remain available.
The optional air suspension allows for height adjustment of the SUV, providing a smooth ride, assisted by a chassis monitoring technology that quickly responds to road conditions.
With orders already open and production scheduled for late 2024, the updated XC90 will continue to compete with other luxury SUVs such as the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Land Rover Discovery, and Mercedes-Benz GLE. The improvements demonstrate Volvo’s commitment to keeping the XC90 competitive and relevant in the combustion vehicle market, despite the rise of electric models.
