Volkswagen has decided to abandon the “ID” naming for its electric cars and will start using more recognizable proper names.

Models such as the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.6, ID.7, and ID.Buzz marked the brand’s initial electrification phase, but upcoming vehicles will no longer follow this alphanumeric logic. The change starts in 2026 and aims to bring electric cars closer to the public with more familiar and conventional names.

According to Volkswagen executive Martin Sander, the new models will not keep conceptual names like “ID.2all” and “ID.Every1” when produced in series. The manufacturer plans to use known names such as Polo and Golf for compact electric models and reintroduce the GTI badge on sporty versions instead of “GTE.” This strategy seeks to strengthen commercial appeal and maintain a connection with the brand’s traditional portfolio.

The restructuring is expected to begin with the launch of the ID.2all successor, scheduled for 2026, followed by a more affordable model derived from the ID.Every1 concept in 2027. Both could inherit older names like Up!, Lupo, or Fox.

Additionally, Volkswagen is working on developing a new electric Golf and an electrified T-Roc SUV, planned for the end of the decade.
