Volkswagen has developed a special badge, the RooBadge, with built-in directional speakers to keep kangaroos off the roads.
The device emits selected sounds to deter the animals and was created in collaboration with experts from the University of Melbourne and the Australian wildlife rescue organization, Wires.
In addition to the badge, VW is working on a license plate holder that incorporates the RooBadge, but both products are still in the testing phase before being made available for sale.
The technology, developed over three years, will be complemented by an app that automatically emits sounds in high-risk kangaroo collision areas, and VW is already planning to expand its use to deter other animals in different parts of the world.
