A Volkswagen updated the GTI and Golf R models for 2025, with both featuring small design changes and more power.

The Golf R now has 328 horsepower, an increase of 13 hp compared to the previous model, and is priced starting at $48,325, including destination charges. However, the major change is that the manual transmission has been replaced with the only available 7-speed DSG transmission.

The GTI now starts at $33,670, an increase of $480. The model maintains the 241 horsepower from its 2.0 turbo engine and front-wheel drive, and also adopts the DSG transmission.

Although the GTI has a new interior layout and physical buttons on the steering wheel, the Golf R did not receive the same update, although it remains the most powerful model in the lineup.

Despite the price increases, sales of the Golf R and GTI have performed well, with the Golf R up 29.6% and the GTI nearly 50%. However, their combined sales still represent only a fraction of Volkswagen’s total sales, especially compared to the brand’s SUVs.

It is expected that sales of the new models will be influenced by the growing popularity of automatic transmissions.
