Volkswagen announced that its electric minivan, the ID.Buzz, will skip the 2026 model year after lower-than-expected demand in the United States.
The ID.Buzz, which appeals to consumers’ nostalgia for the old VW Type 92, arrived on the European market in 2022 as an electric version of the retro minivan, but only reached the United States in 2025.
Now, it appears that 2025 may become the only model year of the ID.Buzz available for purchase in the American market, as the brand announced that the minivan will skip the 2026 model year in the United States.
Speaking to Carscoops, Volkswagen made a point of emphasizing that the decision is merely a pause and that the ID.Buzz will return to the United States in the near future.
In a statement, Kjell Gruner, CEO of the Volkswagen Group of America, said that the ID.Buzz “continues to be an important part of the Volkswagen portfolio” and that “we are not canceling this product in the U.S. market.”
Gruner said that Volkswagen wants to “optimize inventory” and leverage “the 2025 models to support our dealers through mid-year,” adding that the ID.Buzz will return for the 2027 model year, with an announcement scheduled for next year.
The ID.Buzz has struggled to find customers, generating just 4,934 sales in the third quarter of this year. Despite its attractive design, its estimated range of 376 km and starting price of US$ 61,545 likely hampered sales.
