A woman who went to an Audi dealership in Texas (USA) to buy a new car ended up being arrested on suspicion of fraud.
The clip, featuring a compilation of footage from police body cameras, has recently gained attention again after being shared on TikTok.
However, the incident occurred in 2023, when a woman with an alleged false identity appeared at an Audi dealership intending to purchase a car. The sales staff, however, decided to call the police when they suspected something was wrong.
“Do you have anything in your bag that has your name on it?” asks an officer, as the woman presented only a paper temporary driver’s license and an insurance card as identification. “Normally, people have other forms of ID with them.”
After questioning her, the authorities quickly realized the answers were unsatisfactory, and what started as a car purchase attempt quickly escalated into a law enforcement matter.
At one point, one of the officers tried to verify the information on her temporary license in the system but found no data linking the information to the woman sitting in the dealership chair.
The video, which has already received over 5 million views, quickly sparked debate on social media. Many commenters accused the dealership staff of racism and the police of treating the woman unfairly.
“She’s definitely going to [file a lawsuit]. Look how calm she is,” one user commented. “The officer was praying to find something wrong,” argued another. “People can’t believe that Black people can make a lot of money,” lamented a third.
On the other hand, some pointed out that dealerships need to perform thorough ID checks to prevent fraud, and the procedure carried out by the Audi staff is considered standard in cases like this.
“It’s not racism or over-policing. It’s the result of presenting unverifiable information,” said one TikTok user. “As someone who works in sales, if a salesperson finds something suspicious, they’ll flag it as fraud—I’m sure that’s what they did with her,” added another.
To avoid inconveniences like this, it’s ideal to always carry all your identification documents whenever you go to a dealership to buy a new car. Even if the process takes some time, be patient and know that if your documents are correct, everything will go smoothly.
