A woman who decided to decline extra insurance when renting a car bitterly regretted it when absolutely everything went wrong during her trip.

Three years ago, Julia went to Charleston, South Carolina, for a trip. There, she rented a car but chose not to take out additional insurance. “What’s the worst that could happen?” she said at the start of the clip posted on her TikTok profile.

On the very first night, Julia said a man passed by them, and she began to feel that something bad would happen. Suddenly, he collapsed on the ground, leaving Julia and her mother completely shaken.

“I called my husband and said, ‘I want to go home. I think something bad is going to happen. I just don’t want to stay here anymore,'” she recounted.

The next day brought more shocking events. Julia and her mother were enjoying the sunny day at the hotel pool when, suddenly, her mother fell shortly after standing up to take a walk.

“She fell. I went to help her up. Her knee was gone, literally shattered. It looked like a scene from a horror movie,” Julia reported.

Julia, who said she does not handle emergencies very well, began screaming for help. Hotel staff were inside, so she panicked while running back and forth to grab her mother’s belongings, who was still in her swimsuit.

When the ambulance finally arrived, her mother decided to just get a bandage and take the first flight the next morning instead of having surgery in Charleston. Julia spent the day caring for her mother and preparing to go home the following day.

But the chaos was not over: when Julia went down with her mother, who was in a wheelchair, and all their luggage, her rental car was no longer in the parking spot where she had left it.

After searching the parking lot, Julia called her sister for help, and she suggested pressing the key fob button to see if the alarm could be heard.

But when Julia opened her purse, she discovered she had lost the car key. She concluded that, while she was desperate over her mother’s accident, she must have left it behind in the pool area.

Julia then called the police to report the vehicle missing. “The first thing the officer told me on the phone was that the car had just been reported involved in a three-vehicle accident, a head-on collision, and that someone had died.”

An investigator arrived and informed Julia that, although her car was not the vehicle in which someone died, it was still missing, and the police did not know the driver’s whereabouts.

So Julia and her mother had to take a trolley to the airport to avoid missing their flight. “I gave my mother a Xanax, a painkiller, two glasses of wine, kissed her forehead, and prayed that this cocktail would make her sleep through the entire trip home.”

Four days after arriving home, Julia received a call from the investigator that the suspect in the theft and accident had been arrested. The rental car was found, severely damaged, parked at a random commercial location, and Julia’s keys were with the suspect.

Although the arrest occurred three years ago, Julia reveals the case has still not resulted in a conviction. Meanwhile, she said she believes the theft may have been planned by a hotel employee.

“When my mother fractured her knee and I was in complete panic, some Marriott staff saw us get into the ambulance, found our keys, handed the keys to someone else, and there was an opportunist who took advantage of the situation,” she speculated.
