Ukraine had planned to acquire these self-propelled mortars years before the full-scale invasion, but the purchase was not completed despite the funds having already been allocated from the state budget. Former Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Viktor Muzhenko, stated in 2020 that the funds allocated for the acquisition of the Tundzha were returned to the state budget.

The Tundzha self-propelled mortars were produced under license in Bulgaria and were initially exported to Warsaw Pact countries and later to other nations worldwide. The main armament of this vehicle is a regimental M-120 120mm mortar, a model from 1955.

The armored vehicle was developed in the early 1980s under the leadership of chief designer Georgi Ishmeriev. The Tundzha’s ammunition load includes 60 mortar rounds and a PKT machine gun with 2,000 rounds.

Analogous models to the Tundzha, mounted on the MT-LB multipurpose tractor chassis, were designed in the 1960s in the Soviet Union by the Central Research Institute Burevestnik, intended for the Soviet Ground and Airborne Forces.
