Sternenko commented: “This happened a few weeks ago, but now that the videos of these attacks have been released, it’s worth showing.” In the video, the Ukrainian FPV drone manages to climb higher than the Russian Orlan reconnaissance drone, which can reach altitudes of up to 6,000 meters. The FPV drone then approached the wing of the Orlan and exploded, causing the Russian drone to fall.
Another similar incident occurred in May in the direction of Bakhmut. A Ukrainian FPV drone equipped with a VTX 2.5W video transmitter reached and destroyed a ZALA 421-16E reconnaissance drone in flight. Despite the Russian UAV’s attempts to maneuver, it was hit on the wing by the FPV drone.
Recently, soldiers from the Ukrainian Defense Forces shot down another ZALA 421-16E drone using an FPV drone, reinforcing the effectiveness of this strategy.
Intercepting drones with other drones is a relatively new and promising approach in the development of air defense. It is possible that the Ukrainian military-industrial complex is developing a comprehensive anti-drone system based on FPV technology.
