The Turkish Air Force is set to receive 55 HÜRKUŞ II aircraft by 2027

The HÜRKUŞ II training aircraft, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), has flown with its new livery and is about to be incorporated into the Turkish Air Force’s inventory. The first delivery, expected this year, will feature a metallic blue fuselage and metallic gray wings.

Optimized design and lighter structure

Compared to the previous version, HÜRKUŞ II features several visual and functional improvements. The aircraft’s weight has been reduced by approximately 450 to 500 kg—a significant gain considering the previous model’s maximum takeoff weight of 3,750 kg.

This reduction was achieved through increased use of composite materials and lighter metals, as well as redesign and weight relief of metallic components. As a result, performance, fuel efficiency, and flight time will improve, increasing its useful payload capacity.

Aerodynamic and structural changes

Key changes include a more aerodynamic nose, a redesigned propeller spinner, and modified air intakes and engine exhaust outlets. The nose landing gear was also revised to improve weight distribution.

The canopy and cockpit have a slightly lower angle, and the winglets at the wing tips have been redesigned—now smaller and more aerodynamically efficient. Modifications were also made to the joints between the wings and fuselage, and to the tail, which is now lighter and more efficient.

Progress in domestic system development

Since the first HÜRKUŞ flew 11 years ago, Turkey’s defense industry has significantly advanced. Many systems in the new HÜRKUŞ II—including the canopy, cooling system, hydraulic pump, radio, and IFF—are now domestically produced, strengthening the supply chain and integrating Turkish subcontractors into the project.

This progress directly reflects the industrial development initiated with HÜRKUŞ, which now continues with the HÜRJET and the 5th generation KAAN fighter.

No official order for the armed version

Although HÜRKUŞ II is ready for delivery in its training configuration, there is no official confirmation yet regarding the acquisition of an armed variant.
