The Spanish Air Force aims to replace its aging Northrop SF-5M (AE.9) aircraft with a modern jet training platform.
In the selection process, the HÜRJET was evaluated alongside competitors such as the Boeing T-7, KAI T-50, and the Leonardo M-346.
According to industry sources, the Turkish jet is considered the leading candidate for the renewal of the Spanish fleet.
Agreement signed for 24 aircraft
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Turkey and Spain on December 20, 2024, providing for the acquisition of 24 HÜRJET units. The agreement is interpreted as a strategic step toward the realization of the sale, reflecting mutual interest in strengthening industrial and military cooperation between the two countries.
Symbolic flight between commanders reinforces ties
In February 2025, the commanders of the Turkish Air Force, General Ziya Cemal Kadıoğlu, and the Spanish Air Force, General Francisco Braco Carbo, conducted a joint flight in two HÜRJET prototypes. The flight was described as a symbolic gesture of trust and strategic alignment between the two nations’ air forces.
Spanish industry involved in the project
The partnership also includes the involvement of the Spanish industry in the program. In April 2024, TAI signed a €4.8 million contract with the Spanish company Airtificial for the development and supply of the aircraft’s flight control systems (joysticks). Production will take place at Airtificial’s facility in Seville.
The HÜRJET is a next-generation supersonic trainer jet developed by TAI, with capabilities for light attack and air interception missions. Its potential entry into service in Spain would represent a milestone for the jet’s export and for the projection of the Turkish aerospace industry in the European market.
