The 11th test flight of SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft was a success. After the flight, the rocket was seen falling into the Indian Ocean, according to footage released by the company on social media.
The successful test flight, which took place last Monday (13), marked a significant step forward in Elon Musk’s space company’s progress after a series of failures in previous tests.
The spacecraft was launched from Starbase, SpaceX’s launch site in Texas, at 6:23 p.m. (local time) and flew for one hour and six minutes before landing in the Indian Ocean, according to the company’s website.
In a video posted by SpaceX on X (formerly Twitter), the Starship rocket can be seen returning to Earth and breaking through the clouds before hitting the ocean with force.
“Landing confirmed! Congratulations to the entire SpaceX team on the exciting eleventh Starship test flight!” read the post’s caption.
This was the final flight of the second-generation rocket and the first-generation Super Heavy booster, according to SpaceX’s website. With the data from this latest test flight, the company will begin preparations for the next generation of the Starship and Super Heavy.
“The booster successfully performed a single landing burn, designed for use on the next-generation booster. The Super Heavy hovered over the water before shutting down its engines and splashing down,” explained SpaceX.
“In the final minutes of the flight, the Starship performed a dynamic pitch maneuver to simulate the trajectory that future missions returning to Starbase will follow. The Starship then guided itself using its four flaps to the preplanned landing zone in the Indian Ocean, successfully executing a landing flip, a landing burn, and a soft touchdown.”
