The aircraft, according to the Ukrainian ministry, was used by the Russian Ministry of Defense and belonged to the 117th Transport Aviation Regiment.
Ukrainian Defense Intelligence (HUR) claimed responsibility for the fire that destroyed the plane, which was part of a fleet of Soviet-era aircraft primarily used to transport senior officials of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Defense.
The Tu-134, designed and manufactured by the Russian company Tupolev, was widely used during the Soviet era as a passenger transport plane and continues to operate, albeit in a limited capacity, in some former Soviet Union countries like Russia and Belarus.
However, most of the remaining units are used for military, governmental, or VIP flights, with civilian operations of this aircraft becoming increasingly rare.
